Treatment Services We Provide

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient technique of traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for over 5000 years. In the West acupuncture is already a recognized medical practice, and nowadays has also been adopted for veterinary treatments. Acupuncture stimulates a variety of sensory nerves that transmit a signal through the nervous system to the brain. The brain reacts by releasing various chemicals like endorphins to produce multiple physiological effects such as a decrease in inflammation, resultant pain relief, lowering blood pressure, stabilizing body temperature and restoring normal body function. Acupuncture appears to prevent and slow down the progression of many diseases.

Acupuncture, when properly applied by a trained professional, has no contraindications unlike most conventional medications. For example acupuncture is very effective for pain relief, and unlike the use of opiates has no adverse side effects. Acupuncture can also work with prescribed drugs, making their use more effective and allowing the reduction of medication dosage. The success of acupuncture is easily illustrated with paralytic dogs – when spinal surgery has failed, the use of acupuncture has actually resulted in the dog recovering its mobility.

ZenPet practices several highly useful and effective acupuncture techniques:

  • Dry needling is the basic acupuncture technique, one on one with broad and flexible coverage and usage
  • Acupressure is an easy method of stimulating the acupoints using simple finger pressure and can be easily taught to the animal’s owner for on-going home use
  • Electro-acupuncture uses electric pulses, vibrating the needles to maintain a constant stimulus to specific nerves so as to principally boost endorphin release, reduce pain and exercise weak muscles
  • Moxbustion is a herbal heat therapy that is used on an animal’s skin to stimulate an acupuncture point. It promotes skin healing and is commonly used for pain aggravated by cold climate.
  • Aquapuncture is the injection of vitamin, saline or electrolytes solutions into the acupoints to offer even stronger stimulation.

Acupuncture for animals can be applied at any age and can be useful in cases where a dog cannot undergo surgery or where surgery has not had the desired effect. It is also a great way to provide palliative care and a better quality of life to elderly pets with chronic diseases.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Today there is a myriad of literature on herbal medicine research. The results show many positive effects and significant benefits of herbs that have been used in China for more than 2000 years.

With or without acupuncture Chinese herbal medicine acts quickly to strengthen and support the immune system, to control pain and target specific organs, restoring and optimizing their function. The majority of conventional diseases and illness, and those not yet identified by Western medicine, can be treated with Chinese herbs. Herbs are especially beneficial when used in chronic diseases and age-related conditions such as osteoarthritis, liver and kidney disorders, and the immune system. Herbs don’t just treat the symptoms but address their root in a more natural and safer way. They return the body to a state of balance and health, with virtually no or minimal side effects if prescribed and used appropriately.

Chinese herbs can be used in conjunction with other therapies or alone, allowing an integrative approach, boosting the effects of the other drugs or minimizing these drug’s side effects. Generally, the herbal prescriptions are used for longer period of times than conventional drugs, but the length of usage will depend on outcomes and improvements your pet shows, and if the conditions is chronic, acute, requiring maintenance or not. The majority of the Chinese classical herbal formulas we prescribe are ideal for long-term use, naturally all selected for purity, quality and ethics. All doesn’t require preparation and we offer easy instructions of the best ways to administer. You have the choice on whether you purchase the brands we stock or choose your own from an recommended alternate source.

We work closely with local vets. When taking your pet to your vet, it’s very important to inform him about the usage of herbal medicine. It’s advisable to discontinue Chinese herbal medication 5-7 days before and 5-7 after anaesthesia and surgery of any kind, since a lack of information exists about drug interactions between herbs and anaesthetics.

Chinese Herbs and Cancer

Chinese Herbs can work in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiotherapy to decrease the adverse effects of several anti-cancer drug such as anemia, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea and low immunity response. On-going use of herbs can prevent the recurrence of malignancies, stop metastasis, prolong remission and increase survival time.

Older animals and very debilitated pets often cannot take anti-cancer drugs due to their its high toxicity. In such cases Chinese herbs can be used alone as a primary to enhance the immune system.

Food Therapy – Your pet is what it eats

Highly processed pet food is convenient but unfortunately does not provide effective nutrition for your pet’s long-term health and vitality. In many cases, processed foods can be a factor in contributing to poor animal health.

Properly balanced fresh foods, home cooked or raw, contain the full spectrum of nutrients and antioxidants required for health. Dogs and cats did not evolve to eat starch as their primary diet, and must eat fresh ingredients that are biologically appropriate. Current research suggests the ideal dog or cat diet has a low glycemic index, which should minimize surges in insulin, inflammation and oxidation. Additionally, diets should be an important source of anti-oxidants. When measured by these criteria, most commercial diets fail on all accounts, even so-called hypoallergenic diets. Despite their nutritional completeness, research evidence is emerging that points to most canned and kibble diets as being potential promoters of disease (MARSDEN, 2014).

Almost all commercial pet foods are extremely high in carbohydrates, low in absorbable essential nutrients and lacking in phytonutrients, which are vital to your animal’s long-term health.  In addition, much of these off-the-shelf foods contain high starch fillers, artificial chemicals and toxic compounds that are not required by law to be listed on pack. Processed diets raise blood insulin levels, which leads to inflammation and causes the majority of dog and cat ailments such as allergic dermatitis, ear infections, chronic vomiting, pancreatitis, urinary tract obstructions and infections.

With a full appreciation of animal dietary needs and a sound knowledge of nutritional food values, the right food can be a healing agent. We support our acupuncture and herbal treatments with a dietary plan especially tailored for your animal.

Gold Bead Implants

Gold beads implantation (GBI) is a technique where very small gold beads are inserted in specific acupuncture points with the aim of promoting on-going stimulation.  This improves blood circulation, offers meaningful pain control and decreases inflammation.

We use GBI to treat osteoarthritis and neurological conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow displasia, spondylosis and epilepsy/seizures.

It is believed that the long-term stimulation achieved by the gold beads releases a positive electrical charge that neutralizes the acidic pH of the affected and inflamed tissue. With the use of beads for chronic osteoarthritis your pet will often experience increased mobility, energy and improved disposition. The use of gold beads for canine epilepsy will decrease the number of seizures and reduce the need for anti-convulsivant medicines.

Gold bead are implanted in the subcutaneous and muscle tissue as a safe acupuncture technique with no adverse effects. An experienced vet acupuncturist must apply these procedures. It’s a quick and simple technique to perform, and minimally invasive.  It requires mild sedation or a general anesthetic dependent on the animal and the extent of the treatment. Usually recovery is quick. Our experience is that GBI has saved the lives of many animals who do not respond to conventional drugs or other treatment methods.
