Treating Your Pet

TREATING COMMON CONDITIONS AND ILLNESSES

ZenPet can help treat your pets illnesses, ailments & discomforts.

ZenPet offers you a way to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy, and able to live a longer more active life. We don’t just treat illnesses in a non-invasive way, but ensure that your dog remains well and vital. Our range of treatments is designed to offer minimum distress to your animal, to help heal and maintain health.

Our clients often approach us once their animal is ill, and we work with you and your vet to alleviate any pain and suffering using the tried and proven tools of acupuncture, herbal medicine and food therapy. However, ZenPet offers owners a much more positive approach to animal health through effective regulation of a healthy balanced diet and showing you how to manage your pet’s wellbeing on a daily basis. The continual promotion of heavily processed pet foods unfortunately has created an epidemic of obesity, degenerative and inflammatory disorders which we help rectify.

When your animal is ill any further anxiety may aggravate the condition. ZenPet offers you the convenience of home treatment, a familiar environment that offers the least stress for your pet. It also gives us the ability to assess your animal within its own environment to determine any environmental issues that may affect health.

The best person to initially observe any adverse signs with your pet is yourself! If you notice that your animal has lost its zest, is sleeping more or slowing down, and there are no obvious symptoms of disease, then the chances are there is an underlying cause. There are many illnesses that can initially be solved through non-intrusive treatments and others that require conventional veterinary invention. We can help you determine what level of procedures are required and work with your vet to maximize successful treatment outcomes, assisting in the rehabilitation and healing process.

Aging is often difficult for an animal and our treatments can ease this process. When your pet is reaching end of life our response is not to quicken this process, but to use alternate treatment to provide quality of life. One of our crucial goals is to make a pet’s final weeks or days more comfortable, using effective acupuncture treatments, herbal medication, dietary strategies and humane care.

Treatment types

Back pain, osteoarthritis and joint degeneration

These conditions are prevalent in many animals and are related to both genetic and environmental factors. Pure breeds and elderly pets tend to suffer more with pain and poor mobility. In chronic cases surgery may be advocated but often such intervention is not selected and the animal is simply dosed with painkillers and/or anti-inflammatories. Many times such action achieves poor results, however acupuncture is an effective but non-invasive alternative when medication is not enough.

Response times after acupuncture treatment vary depending upon the condition and age of your pet. After a few sessions most animals experience a significant decrease in pain and better mobility. One of the most significant environmental issues with joint pain is the use of processed high starch based diets for pets. These diets tend to spike insulin levels leading to recurrent inflammation, particularly of the joints. We recommend alternate species-appropriate diets to alleviate such painful conditions.

Spinal disorders

Dogs and cats often suffer from spinal diseases often involving compression of the spinal cord. Such disease is the major cause of disability in animals. The most common problems affecting the spinal cord are slipped discs, infections, fractures, dislocations, hereditary deformities and embolisms. The most usual sign of such disorder is pain, muscle atrophy and postural changes, plus partial or total limb paralysis. Such conditions can create urinary and fecal retention or incontinence.

There are many ways to treat spinal disorders depending on the type and the severity of the lesion and symptoms. Treatments can be surgical or conservative but in both situations acupuncture is very helpful in pain reduction and rehabilitation of your pet.

Seizures & other neurological conditions

Did you know that your pet can have epileptic seizures or even Alzheimer’s-like illnesses in humans? Dogs are more prone than cats. Sometimes the early symptoms remain unnoticed so it’s advisable to be attentive to any of these signs:

  • Uncoordinated when walking
  • Difficulty walking straight; often walking in circles
  • Abnormal head positioning
  • Excessive vocalization (barking, whining or meowing)
  • Localized or generalized tremors
  • Muscle weakness
  • Change in level of consciousness and/or mental state
  • Unlearning and/or changing habits
  • Pain and/or aggressiveness

Your local vet should be able to assess your pet, or refer it to a neurologist. The diagnosis is always very important to establish a proper plan of treatment. Acupuncture is a strong ally in the rehabilitation of neurological diseases.

Gastrointestinal complaints

There is a current epidemic rise of gastrointestinal sensitivities in pets, with symptoms such as slow digestion, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain, etc. Many factors can contribute to gastrointestinal diseases, however it is now obvious that these complaints are very common amongst pets that have spent the majority of their life eating highly processed dry food/kibble. Highly processed pet foods are now widely promoted as a convenient way for your pet to gain all the vitamins and minerals they require, however are generally made up of meat by-products, corn, wheat, dyes and preservatives. Avoiding this type of food and introducing appropriately tailored home-made diets can often improve your pet’s health and help to heal their chronically inflamed gut. The choice of raw or cooked food is dependent upon your pet’s specific condition. Combining such food therapy with acupuncture treatment and/or Chinese herbs usually produces excellent results.

Geriatric conditions

Naturally old age in pets is just like all living things – difficult!

Longevity is influenced by many factors – genetic predisposition, type of living environment and the food and care that your senior pet will receive. Rule of thumb is that a pet is considered a senior from 7 years old. From this age onwards the degree of frailty will determine whether your senior pet is geriatric. Management of lifestyle is highly important in this later period and will determine whether your pet is happy or suffers. If your pet exhibits at least 3 of the following signs on a chronic basis, then they are considered geriatric:

  • General weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Slowed mobility
  • Fatigue

If your animal is experiencing any of these symptoms, then a visit to your vet is a must. Your vet will run specific tests to diagnose and recommend appropriate treatment. A holistic approach is extremely beneficial to improve and provide pet wellness in the last years of its life. This includes a regime of acupuncture as well diet adjustment and specific herbal medicine. ZenPet has much to offer in regard to improving the longevity and quality of life.

Palliative care

In the later stages of life, whether your animal will die of natural causes or from a contracted terminal illness, the desire of every pet owner should be to make the remaining months or days comfortable, pain-free and stress free for their animal.

Unfortunately it has become common practice to undertake euthanasia. However often such as course is very premature, since many animals can gain relief and comfort through non-invasive treatment such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal treatment and a change of diet. If pain is relieved it is always far better for all concerned if your animal dies happily and peaceful amongst familiarity.
