Didi, a 4 year old male Dachshund, jumped off the couch and had an acute episode of severe pain and partial loss of the hind limbs movements. The images exams showed the presence of a very common disease in this type of breed: Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). IVDD is a condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae of the spinal column either bulge or burst (herniate) into the spinal cord space. These discs then press on the nerves running through the spinal cord causing pain, nerve damage, and even paralysis.
Didi was treated exclusively with acupuncture and recovered quickly.
